A turnkey solution for theatrical equipment automation

Project Goals

The client was looking for an Angular development company to develop version 5 of existing software that was built over 15 years ago. The goal was to update it using modern tech stack and UI/UX approaches extending functionality and adding new features

Project Outcome

The first stage was to analyze competitors and transfer the existing functionality to a modern tech stack improving UI/UX along the way. Once that was done, a lot of new features were built on top and active development is still ongoing. The system is in an active production phase and is being used in a lot of major theaters all over the world

Angular Development

The application portal and user interface front end were built utilizing the Angular Framework

Automated Functional Testing

Cucumber and Protractor were utilized to create a fully automated suite of functional tests that could be run in the background whenever new feature was implemented to make sure the application is stable and to minimize manual QA effort

Node.js Development

The back end was created utilizing Node.js

Complex Animations and Visuals

PixiJS was utilized to implement advanced UI features

Machinery Visualization Screen

Used to visualize movement of all the machines involved in the show in real time with the ability to control and adjust parameters on the fly

Flexible Customization of Automation Moves

Depending on the machine(s) used in a move, there are hundreds of parameters like speed, acceleration, ramp, non-linear speed curve, 2 or 3-dimensional trajectories, start and target position, conditions, and many others. Advanced system configurations even allow attaching the actual actor to emulate flying moves

Show Programming Automation

Program consequential steps of animations, actions, and various effects involving on-stage decoration to create a fully functional performance. Break the show down into chapters for easier management

Configurable System

The architecture of the system allows enabling or disabling certain features depending on the needs of a theater or a show reducing the costs and the amount of equipment required

Multi-user Environment

The system supports multiple operators working at the same time, each having their own role and set of machines to control

Machine Safety Interface

Due to high risks involved with people working with automated heavy machinery, a safety interface was introduced that controls the actual mechanical movements of machines via numerous sensors and prevents dangerous or hazardous conditions such as machines exceeding their movement or load limits, collisions, emergency stops etc
